About Us

In November 1989 Jane Hammett, Don Bright, Brenda Lewis, Gayle Fraiser, and Fran Whiting got together to form a new kennel club in the Sandhills area. A meeting was called by placing an ad in the local newspaper indicating anyone interested in the area was to meet at the Sandhill’s Community College.
Refreshments and dog magazines were brought in hopes of a good turn out. Approximately ten people attended this first meeting. The goal was to eventually hold an AKC dog show and obedience trial as well as fun and sanctioned matches, training classes, grooming classes and eye clinics.
At the second meeting, nominations were made for the club election which would be held in January 1990. Four sets of by-laws were considered. Training classes, bake sale, membership dues, and newsletters were planned to build a treasury. By April 2, 1990 $538.97 was in the bank. This was accomplished by a good group of people, some went to shows, but most did not. This did not matter because progress was being made.
News started to spread about the club and the membership began to grow. Meetings were held at the homes of Fran Whiting and Kirby Mataxis. Attendees would socialize, tell stories, and share ideas. Everyone looked forward to those meetings.
The first fun match held on April 27, 1991 was a huge success with 114 dogs entered. Every dog entered took home a dog toy made by club members. People were very complimentary.
The club has grown with members who include AKC Judges, Professional Dog Handlers, Junior Handlers, Exhibitors, Breeders, Field, and Obedience people. We have joined the ranks of the AKC as a Sanctioned Club. Proceeds from our events go to the Humane Society, scholarship funds, dog show supplies, and money needed to put on our shows. Members also participate in many community service projects. Many good, hardworking people make up the MCKC.
